Semagultide and Tirzepatide are both GLP-1 medications used for the treatment of diabetes and medical weight loss. GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. This particular receptor increases insulin sensitivity, slows digestion, and promotes faster and longer fullness causing less food consumption and as a result, weight loss.
Both medications aid in weight loss by signaling the brain that your stomach is full, while also slowing down gastric emptying. This allows patients to experience less hunger and feel satisfied with fewer calories.
The most common side effects include the gastrointestinal (GI) system, such as abdominal discomfort, constipation, heartburn, bloating, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. The side effects are typically mild and can be managed with a change in diet, or anti-nausea medication in many cases. Side effects are more common during the initiation and phase of taking the medication and should lessen or resolve over time.
Although Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are some of the safest and most effective medical weight loss and diabetes medications on the market, like most medications, there are some contraindications which will prevent you from taking GLP-1 medications. If you or a family member has a history of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC), or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN), you are not a candidate for taking this class of medications. Additionally, if you have a personal history of pancreatitis, gastroparesis, or dialysis, you should avoid taking these medications. Women should prevent pregnancy and stop taking this medication if you become pregnant.
